Ushering in this new era, the world is sophisticated with new emerging technologies which can change our way of living. Internet of Things(IoT) is one of the leveraging technology that can impact our way of living by getting things smarter. When the IoT technology set its foot into the emerging technology, its main idea was to connect the frequently used objects to the Internet and also to embark on one another, with the foremost objective to provide users with smarter way and more efficient experiences.
It’s an emerging technology, where the machines are embedded with sensors which relate them with each other for exchange of information and data without human intervention. Simply we can say that the Internet of Things is about connecting internet-enabled devices that relay information back to us-to cloud-based applications and to each other (device to device connection). These ‘smart’ devices can be anything from mobile phones, fridges, washing machines to wearables, medical, smart homes etc.
We say it to be magic when our delusions whim of having smart homes, smart cars, smart computers etc that knew every whereabouts and act intellectually using the data gathered without any help from us. IoT describes a system where items in the physical world, from machine to sensors within or attached to these items, are connected to the Internet via wireless and wired Internet connections. These sensors can use various types of local area connections such as RFID, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and ZigBee etc. Sensors can also have wide area connectivity such as GSM, GPRS, 3G, and latest LTE.
Example: Installing the Ola app and booking a taxi sends information about your location and necessary personal details to ‘enable a smart response’.Essentially, Ola’s Cloud provides almost real-time data comparison to match the needs of the person ordering the cab with that of the available taxis.
INTERNET OF THINGS DRIVEN BY COMBINATION OF SENSORS, CONNECTIVITY AND PEOPLE & PROCESS:
1.Sensors & Actuators:
Sensors are the troops of the “Internet of Things,” on-the-ground pieces of hardware doing the critical work of monitoring processes, taking measurements and collecting data. They are often one of the first things people think of when picturing IoT.
We will see IoT sensors which are used for optical, ambient light, temperature, pressure, Inertia, humidity, proximity, gesture, touch and fingerprint sensing applications. These sensors are based on MEMS technology. MEMS is the short form of Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems
2. Connectivity :
Here the inputs from sensors are digitalized and placed onto networks
IoT devices connectivity using a range of different communication protocols, which include: (such as ZigBee, Bluetooth, LTE, Wi-Fi and mobile networks etc.
Now, These network can be combined into bi-directional system that an integrate data, people, process for better analyzing and decision making
TOP DIVERSE APPLICATIONS OF IOT:
There are diverse applications of IoT from medical to agricultural industry. The potentialities offered by the IoT make it possible to develop myriad of applications based on it, of which only a few applications are currently deployed. In future, there will be intelligent applications for smarter homes and offices, smarter transportation systems, smarter hospitals, smarter enterprises and factories. In the following subsections, some of the important example applications of IoT are
i) Transport: Traffic Routing, Smart Parking, Airlines, Package Monitoring
ii) Health care : Patient Care, Bio wearable food sensors
iii) Building : Security , Lighting,
IoT will have many applications in the healthcare sector, with the possibility of using the cell phone with RFID-sensor capabilities as a platform for monitoring of medical parameters and drug delivery. Edible, biodegradable chips can be introduced into human body for guided actions. Paraplegic persons can have muscular stimuli delivered via an implanted smart thing controlled electrical simulation system in order to restore movement function
iv) Telecommunications Industry:
IoT will create the possibility of merging of diverse applications in domain of telecommunication technologies and create new services. An illustrative example is the use of GSM, NFC (Near Field Communication), low power Bluetooth, WLAN, multi-hop networks, GPS and sensor networks together with SIM-card technology.
Smart Wearable devices driven by Internet of Things(IoT):
Wearable devices and home health monitoring devices assisting patients. The devices are capable enough to transmit vital sign data from a patient home to the hospital staff. It allows them to have a real time monitoring of patient’s health. These devices use wirelessly connected glucometers, scales, heart rate and blood pressure monitors.
The internet of things will take us beyond connection to become part of living, moving global nervous system.
The IoT market in the future tends to grow as its scope is expanded into the consumer sector centred on lifestyle services from the social infrastructure (utilities, transportation, automation, etc.) and safety management sector. Sophisticated wireless communication technologies are expected to make a huge network as communication functions are connected to all object units. From the prospect of the electrical construction industry, we have entered the era of connecting all things via communication through the era of connecting all the things using electricity.
